So, after listening to a podcast where Mike Frost talked about his book: “Keep Christianity Wierd,” I decided to download it as an audiobook. Believe it or not, though I have even decided to do something about it and push pack on our comfy cushy Christian sub-culture and do stuff a little weird. I’m a bit inspired right now about the word eccentric as applied to Christianity and how Frost points out that it really basically means ‘off center.’
So, here’s my little off center idea. I’m not going to explain it, I’m simply going to copy and paste and you’ll see where I am going with this. The below is my letter to every house in our street; Cunderderdin loop Dawesville. (It’s also worth noting that there are another 2 Christian households in our street who are Christians.)
Dear Neighbour,
My name is Peter and I just wanted to first apologize to you. I’m sorry it’s taken me this long to get in touch. I’m sorry I may not yet know you by name. That’s a big deal for me because as a Christian, I’m commanded to love and care for my neighbors, and that’s not just next door.
Since you’ve read this far, thank you for not chucking this in the bin yet. I know it’s annoying when you get junk mail posing as letters but I just need to let you know a few things. One of the things that I do is pastor a local baptist church by the name of Waratah Christian Community. I just want to personally promise you that I whatever your wounds, doubts, fears, questions or background; as far as I’m concerned you are welcome at our Church.
Having said that I get that you may not be into church stuff right now, maybe you’re not into God at all, but if there is anything I can do or you just want someone to talk to, drop us a line and let me know. (You’ll notice I’ve included my business card in this envelope.)
There’s a lot of things that I can’t do and as a church, we have our limitations. Here’s the thing though; if you want me to pray for you, let me know. If you want us as a church to pray for you, let me know. If you want to pray with someone, let me know. If you don’t want to do any of that right now, that’s cool, but I want you to know that I’m happy just to hear your story.
Yes, we do have a bunch of activities that happen at the church but I’m not here to just advertise our stuff. If you want to know more, again get in touch with us.
So yeah, I think that is about it.
God bless you, from your neighbour
Peter.
So yeah, there’s a few that will think this is one of the weirdest letters that they have ever received. Good.
Bless ya:)
P.S. Feel free to change the name(s) copy and paste and use it for yourself. In fact, I challenge you.
